The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned eight security personnel who were on duty at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of the rape and murder of a junior woman doctor. They have been asked to appear at the CBI’s Central Government Office (CGO) complex in Salt Lake, Kolkata, this weekend for questioning. This follows the summons issued to seven nursing staff who were present at the ward where the victim’s body was discovered on August 9, 2024.
Out of the seven nursing staff, four appeared at the CBI office on March 20 and were interrogated for several hours. Sources have not disclosed details of their statements. The remaining three are expected to appear soon, after which the CBI will begin questioning the security personnel. Officials aim to complete this phase of the probe by Monday.
The fresh round of interrogations comes ahead of a scheduled hearing at the Calcutta High Court’s single-judge bench led by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh next week. Currently, three parallel court proceedings are ongoing in the case. Apart from the Calcutta High Court, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, is also hearing the matter. Additionally, a special court in Kolkata is conducting separate proceedings.
Investigators are also examining possible lapses in the initial inquiry conducted by Kolkata Police. The CBI is preparing a supplementary charge sheet, which is expected to highlight allegations of evidence tampering in the early stages of the investigation. The agency is working toward finalizing its findings before the upcoming court hearings.
With multiple agencies involved in the case, the investigation continues to focus on the sequence of events leading up to the incident. The questioning of medical and security staff is being treated as a key aspect of the probe, as authorities work toward gathering more details surrounding the circumstances of the crime.
